Happy Hour Star: Marble + Rye

One of the best budget happy hours in Buffalo just happens to be vegan

Marble + Rye’s pakoras with chimichurri are quite the happy hour snack for $3

The happiest of happy hours include food, lest the bargain booze leaves you wobbly. At Marble + Rye, one of the best happy hour menus in Buffalo just happens to be vegan, and an absurdly good deal: three dishes for $9.

Nope, not a typo. Three dishes at $3 each makes $9 – and these aren’t common-denominator Sysco snacks, either.

Marble + Rye offers its happy hour 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday

At Marble + Rye, 112 Genesee St., 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, $3 small plate appetizers and $8 house cocktails (Americano, bourbon + tea, daiquiri, gin gimlet, Moscow mule, spritz) can make budget nights out a reality.

Sichuan-inspired cucumber salad tosses cucumber, shredded cabbage and cilantro with crunchy broad beans and peanuts in chile and sesame oil plus rice wine. It’s lit with chile heat but not a full-on burn.

Fingerling potatoes, smashed and fried to a bronzed crustiness, arrive with chimichurri, the Argentinian herb sauce,  a lively emerald dip, based on parsley, garlic, vinegar, and olive oil. It also comes with cultured creme fraiche, which vegans can disregard.

Pakoras are Indian-style fritters flavored with onion and ginger, made with chickpea flour, which means they’re also gluten-free. Marble + Rye’s version is fluffy and all but greaseless.

The trio is available on the main menu in larger sizes. What happy hour customers get for $3 is nearly a half portion.

If you’re interested in a more extensive dining experience, Marble + Rye is justly renowned for its double smashburger, Detroit-style pizza rimmed with crispy cheese, and pappardelle bolognese.
