Tracing the roots of delicious Buffalo holiday traditions

Join me in UB holiday cooking traditions show – or just watch it later

Tom and Jerry’s, a holiday tradition at McPartlan’s Corner and other old-school Buffalo taverns

Every culture prepares for big days, in every room of the house. In the kitchen, recipes reserved for celebratory seasons are consulted, and shopping lists made.

In Buffalo, that means traditional potato pancakes in varying denominations, up to a dozen dishes for Polish Wigilia, pots of Hoppin’ John, mugs of steaming Tom & Jerrys, eggnog’s hot, foamy cousin.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, I’ll be hosting Webinar Wednesday, a program organized by the University at Buffalo’s Office of Alumni Engagement. It’s a live webinar with a member of the UB community (alumni, faculty, staff) to contribute some of their expertise to the community discussion. Four Bites patrons have the chance to join, or just register and get a copy of the show to watch later.

On Wednesday, via Zoom conference, I’ll offer a brief presentation on Buffalo holiday dishes. Then I’ll ask audience members to share, presenting their pride and joy. They describe its role in the holiday, and any information they have about the recipe’s history.

If they have the recipe, they can even pop it in the chat. That way we can all have the chance to start another holiday tradition.

If you’re interested, here’s the link to register.

Fun fact: You don’t have to participate to get a copy of the show. Register, and you’ll get a link to the completed show the next day, for viewing at your leisure.
